205.55.1 General Information
Facilities exist within the Department of Paediatrics for students who wish to proceed to the Master of Science degree. Inquiries should be directed to the Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Paediatrics.
In addition, Paediatrics is one of several departments working jointly to offer a PhD in medical sciences (see §205.43). Highly qualified candidates with an MSc or MD, who wish to proceed to a PhD will be considered. Inquiries about this program should be directed to the Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Paediatrics.
Entrance Requirements
Candidates who wish to apply for either the MSc or PhD program must have a BSc, MSc or MD with an average of at least 3.1 in the last two years of undergraduate work (or graduate work) at the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution. Where applicable (see §203.2.4), proficiency in English must be demonstrated by one of the following: a minimum TOEFL score of 570 (paper-based) or 95 with at least 20 per section (internet-based); MELAB minimum score of 91; CAEL minimum of 70 with at least 70 on each subtest; PTE (Academic) overall minimum score of 65; or IELTS minimum score of 7.5 with at least 6 on each band.
Financial Assistance
Financial assistance may be available through various University of Alberta awards or from studentships available from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, or other agencies.
205.55.2 The Degree of MSc
Program Requirements
Required courses depend on the area of specialization and the undergraduate background of the student; however, the MSc program normally consists of 9 and a thesis. Course requirements are based on recommendations from the graduate coordinator, the supervisor, and the supervisory committee. A minimum of 9 in graded graduate-level courses listed in the Medical Sciences Graduate Program Approved Course Listing, or approved equivalent, is required.
Length of Program
The time required to complete the MSc will vary with the individual candidate; however, a minimum of 12 months is normally required.
