MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome to the University of Alberta!
As one of Canada’s top universities, the University of Alberta offers a vibrant and engaging community of learning and discovery. We are, in the words of our founding president, Henry Marshall Tory, dedicated to “the uplifting of the whole people.” I am proud that we fulfill this promise in many different ways.
Whenever I speak with our students and alumni, I am always struck by their incredible passion for their work. I look at our students, who have initiated amazing programs such as the Kenya Water Ceramic Project, which brings innovative water filters and wood burning stoves to rural areas of Kenya. Students are also the force behind Five Days to End Homelessness, a campaign to raise money and awareness for the Youth Emergency Shelter Society. These projects have made such a profound difference in communities, both locally and abroad, thanks to such great leadership from our students.
Our alumni have also had significant impact on the world. They are leaders in the realms of politics, business, science and the arts, and beyond. Nobel Prize Laureates, Prime Ministers and Academy Award Winners all have University of Alberta degrees on their resumes. They have cultivated their passion and curiosity, and inspired and ignited change.
The University of Alberta is here to help you find what inspires you and succeed. Regardless of whether you are a new or returning student, I encourage you take advantage of your time here to explore new ideas, learn needed skills, and expand your worldview. Discover where your passion and talents lie and do your utmost to bring positive change to our world.
Yours sincerely,
Indira V Samarasekera, O.C.
President and Vice-Chancellor
